I know I wanted to get going on quilting the Big Fan quilt, but I changed my mind 😀 Like that never happens 😉 I’ve been dying to try convergence quilts and figured I try / test a small one to see how it worked out and ended up looking. I’ve had this plotting in the back of my mind for a week or so now, it was just a matter of getting the right colours together that would look really good done like this.
These are the 4 fabrics I finally settled upon. A kitty batik (that I thought i had more of :'(), a tulip fabric, some bright yellow and a nice blue green yellow medley … These all just really great together and the compliment each other nicely! I was really hope that these fabrics would look great using this technique.
Here’s the first part of the convergence done. Hmmm .. not to sure about this .. that yellow is too ‘light??’
Now a side point here .. in his book, Convergence Quilts, Ricky Tims says to use 12″ – 14″ pieces, well my kitty batik was only 9″ wide, so that dictated my fabric sizes.
Here it is after the 2nd convergence .. Not to shabby me thinks, but my lack of a larger piece is rather making this look ‘blockier’ than it should?? Not sure if I’m saying this right, but I’m thinking that I should have maybe done narrower pieces to have more?? Or to create more of a distinction .. Also I’m thinking that the yellow just isn’t the right tone .. altho in a traditional quilt this would have rocked 😀 But I do like it .. Not to shabby for my first attempt me thinks! Now after both convergences, this measured up at 13½ x 14½”
TA DA!!!! The final top with borders .. The borders tend to make it look more like the original squares I used almost .. but I’m still okay with it being my first attempt. It’s nice and bright and fresh and spring-y like! I do rather like this!!
After putting a narrow frame around the inner top and then adding a 3″ border – this quilt measures out at 20¾ x 19¾”.
Now this is just one method in his book .. this is the book that I ordered as a Cmas present from Reg that didn’t make it here on time. But I will play some more .. there’s an awesome gallery in here that is chock full of gorgeous quilts to give you inspiration and ideas!
NOW I’m off to do the motifs for the big fan .. and I’ll likely baste this one at the same time too.
Heh 😀 I think you rather get the point .. the top is DONE for this .. pics are so-so .. I got kidnapped today and lost the last bit of daylight so nite pics and flash were the order of the day (nite??) But tomorrow is another day for a killer shot for this quilt … I think it’s going to look just awesome in daylight!!
Layout done 😀
I think I like it. it’s got a nice look to it and gives you a nice spring-y feeling looking at it .. still thinking that one colour family would have been better for the star arms. I see a few spots where I could have kicked myself, but I certainly wasn’t going to frog it . no way! it’s a scrappy quilt and while I tried to not have the same colours next to each other (example – the 9 patches on the bottom left), there just wasn’t a choice in some cases .. but I did okay and I think this will look all cool quilted up and on a girl / woman’s bed 😀
Now this top is going to be entered in a contest .. IF I win, (which I don’t think I will as I did scrappy) then I’ll ship the top, backing and binding to them, they quilt it professionally and it becomes the cover for the pattern that this quilt was made from ..and it is eventually returned to me LOL
I’ve several people ask me where this pattern is from – this one was a one day mystery hunt in honour of National Quilter’s Day and the pattern is no longer available. But you can sign up to participate in future hunts – there’s one starting up on May 1st – I have a lot of fun doing this and get to find some neat online quilt shops. So I’m looking forward to the May Flowers Hunt.
Well it’s been a day and a half here and I wanted to try and get this top pieced, but it’s not going to happen .. I started to see where I wasn’t quite paying attention, and had to frog .. so instead of making more mistakes .. I stopped .. Figured it was the best thing to do .. maybe another hours work to piece the final 2 sections, then put it all together .. but nope .. that can be tomorrow.
This isn’t the best pic, but it’ll have to do for now .. but it does give you the general idea of how it’s going to look .. I did better this time with spreading out all the different fabrics so they weren’t all bunched up in one area, but there’s still a bit of that going on .. you can likely tell where I was starting to get tired with the duplicating fabrics. Tomorrow this will be all pieced tho 😀 I’m tickled about about that .. gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling that it’ll be done .. then basting the big fan, quilting it, initial colour challenge blocks and hopefully I can squeeze in testing a mystery
Why the big push you might ask?? Well as of the 13th, I’ll be starting training for tech support for a digital provider .. I’ll be one of those annoying tech support people that ask you all sorts of irrelevant questions that tick you off to no end .. so I’m on my final countdown for getting stuff done. I KNOW that I’ll be dog tired and will likely just fall over asleep when I get home from work, and my quilting progress will likely come to a stand still until I get accustomed to 40 hr work weeks .. yes I’ve been busy and active, but it’s different with working full-time. And it looks like I’ll be on afternoons, which is sort of okay as I’m a nite owl anyways .. but there’s Kyle’s ballgames and whatnot that I’ll miss .. I’m NOT going to miss his confirmation or grade 8 graduation tho – you can bet your bippy on that!
Anywho .. I’m whacked and I’m off to sleep .. or at least to read for a bit – THEN fall asleep 😀
It doesn’t seem like I got a lot done today – Not sure why – just does .. I know I’ve been in my cat cave for most of the day strip piecing and cutting, strip piecing and cutting .. I just feel like I should have more done today that I actually do ** shrug .. ah well ..
Almost Part 4
I did do a LOT more cutting today .. I thought I would make it easier on myself to have my strips the size I need for the split 9 part of this particular block I did today .. What I’ve got here are the parts of the split 9 / HST just before I put them all together into their respective parts. This was as close to a brown bag as I could have gotten without actually using one .. harmonizing colours to an extent together (but this quilt is made up of colours that harmonize .. ) or colours that create enough of a contrast so that they don’t blend into the next square.
I think I did pretty well in trying to not have the same colours together, but as you can see in these, that some greens did end up together – but the good thing is, they aren’t the same green .. but then again .. I was giving it an honest effort NOT to control this too much .. I did pretty good me thinks! and nothing really clashes here either .. but i won’t know for sure until I get the blocks / squares all together in a layout ….
Parts 1 - 5
And that’s the next step! I’ve everything all ready to go for the layout part of it … I’m almost tempted to just lay it out on the floor to see how it looks, but that means I have to pick it up again! Not tonite . please not tonite .. This is going to roughly finish up at 60 x 72″ and I’m not sure my design wall will hold all that – width wise, yes .. length .. no .. The pattern didn’t call for strip piecing .. but I wasn’t about to sew all 168 2 ½” squares together 1 by 1 .. that would exceed my patience factor!
I feels GREAT to have these all squared up ready to go .. no more cutting / squaring for a bit now 😀 Least not with this quilt! Tomorrow Part 6!
Last nite I had my fabric cut into strips and squares just waiting for me to get to it today 🙂 I decided to strip piece in order to make things easier and quicker for me .. worked out pretty good, but I kept reversing the block .. but it all worked out in the end.
I ended up with these poor orphans left over from the top rows of strips starting from the top (lights and mediums) Rather pathetic little pile left over isn’t it? But it does tell me that I did a great job estimating how many strips I would need for Part 3 – and that makes me feel great .. I’m sure I’ll something useful for them .. not to sure what .. but I’m sure that something will come to me .. It usually does .. right as I’m about to fall asleep at nite .. then of course .. you pop right away .. You know .. so far this quilt hasn’t made to much of a dent into my scrap bag .. it sure doesn’t look any smaller .. and we aren’t going to talk about the pile that is breeding on the corner of my cutting table .. there’s likely another ½ bag there at least (!)
.. 26 … 27 … 28 … 29 … aw crap .. I’m 3 short – pfft. Ah well ..scrounge, hunt, scrounge for long enough bits of this and that to make make them up .. I wanted them to be somewhat close in colour so it wasn’t to scattered all over the map .. yes as Carmen says, I’ve redefined “controlled scrappy” one of these days I’ll do a true brown bag scrappy quilt .. promise! Well i finally found enough of 2 different colour schemes to get the final 3 blocks done and voila! Part 3 is fini! Holly can you see them???
I’m done in .. been a day of popping up and down like a jack in the box, as well as doing some grocery shopping, daddy drop /drive in, dinner, basketball on tv .. blah blah blah .. you get the picture .. so tomorrow, I start on Part 4 ..
Oh and my order showed up from joann’s .. I ended up with 2 yards of the material I ordered instead of 3 .. well that’s better than nothing I guess .. what a waste of a 40% off coupon tho pfft
Meeces .. bloody meeces .. well as you know I had quite the issue with these bloody things (!) They’d not been approved by my family or even recognized. BUT i did get a brain flash yesterday regarding them .. What I did was make them like i was making a stuffed toy – right sides together, turned inside out and fused into place .. I fused taped them for the time being along with the opening i made when i surgically removed the offending
ears. I think that I’m going to leave the ears loose and just quilt them at the base – 3D tails was suggested, but with the use that this quilt is going to get, I don’t want to have to be attaching tails over and over again .. I think that I will just embroider them in place with floss.
Kyle just came home and I aked him if he wanted to see my meeces .. he likes them and says NOW they look like mice (@@). He asked me what I was going to do with the meeces – meaning new squares – nope so I should him the surgery I would be performing ;). He thought it was pretty cool and is playing with some fuse tape and some scraps at my ironing board .. but this kid doesn’t want to make a quilt.. he’s made a quilt block for a school assignment, but not on my machine .. I had a BOM from joanne that included the fabric and let him hand sew it .. he did a pretty good job and got A .. he not only had to do the quilt block, but had to explain the process to his class – he was in grade 4 at the time.
The fish gave me other issues as well – or I gave it to them .. I think that I was number reading challenged yesterday .. i thought I read 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ for the body .. It’s 2″ x 3 1/2″ and I didn’t notice until the fish were almost done .. I got the itty bitty pieces for the body and background put together and then the tails done .. so I wanted to make one up to see how it looks, as I was getting ready to put the background strip across the top i noticed that it was wayyy to short .. i’m like .. !?!?!?!? .. so i looked at the pattern 3 more times before i realized i had miscut it .. i was horrified – just sick with it all – I had not been having a good nite at all and was more than a wee bit tense – BUT it was savable .. I just sewed an extra
seam down the middle, so they look like HSTs instead .. i don’t care – they are done and the right bloody size!! That’s saying a lot.
I got 4 more meeces to do .. well 3 1/2 as I showed kyle the steps I was taking on the one – then to decide putting it together ..
Tomorrow is going to be a great day quilt wise :D.
- The attic windows charity quilt has a home with Ruth in Georgia – I just have some diagonal quilting to do as the 90% of it is already done and it’ll be time to put the label on and close up the top where I did the quilt birthing. I’ll be sending this quilt along with some fabric and boo-boo blocks. It is my goal to have this quilt finished tomorrow. God willing
- Reg’s Quilt has finally resolved itself in my mind .. i’m going to do a variation of double irish chain. Since my quilt pro is so outdated, it won’t accept new fabric images from me .. so, this is a close representation of the fabric that I’m going to use. The background isn’t country but is off-white in colour and has flowers and ‘foilage’ that pulls most of the colours that are represented together; the greens, reds and blue are pretty close in tone and hue. This quilt is all strip piecing then cutting, so this shouldn’t take me all that long to do. it was fun getting all these colours to work together .. The colours I ended up with are not the colours that I started with for the most part. Reg’s quilt should go very quickly for me. Cut strips, piece, cut and resew 😉 .. voila .. gotta love quick quilts. And he will prolly only use it for the winter to keep his feet and legs warm, so this one needs to get soon!
- Kyle’s quilt is finally back in blocks – I finished that this afternoon. I’ll press the blocks then square them up. Then sew them all back together :S .. I hate it when I’m a twit! Hopefully that will teach me .. prolly not tho. I’m going to finish up Kyle’s top after I get reg’s fabric cut out. I still need to get some backing for this quilt so there isn’t that much of a hurry to get this all together until I have the backing fabric.
I’m going to have a busy day tomorrow me thinks .. wonder how much I will get done .. it will be GREAT to cross off items on this very old list .. But Lordy is it GREAT to be back sewing again!!! WOOO HOOOO **kittyhappydance
