Crossed Off Items

Amazingly enough, I managed to get quite a bit of my goals accomplished this weekend! **kittyhappydance for me!! I didn’t get them all done, but that’s okay, the rest can be worked on by the guys over the next 5 days (uh huh we’ll see).. Yesterday I wrote

I start my weekend now (I’ve tues and wed for May for Kyle’s confirmation / rehearsal) and my goals are modest .. weed the front garden, plant my seeds, convince reg or kyle to dig up the back veggie garden and plant there, wash my fan quilt, stitch the binding on the kitty quilt and maybe get some laundry done if Kyle’s not taken over the washer again .. oh and try to avoid getting kidnapped for groceries and whatnot πŸ˜€

Out of that list, I did the front garden, planted my flower seeds, washed (and repaired) the fan quilt, took daylight pics of the fan quilt AND the spinner quilt, and have just over 1 side of binding on my kitty quilt to do. And during this time, managed to attend a meeting a Kyle’s school for his grade 8 trip and graduation and confirmation rehearsal – plus buy him dress shoes! So i’ good about the veggie garden not getting done, that can be dug up in the next few days .. I don’t have plants for it yet, so it wasn’t that critical for me to do.

HPIM2863.jpgNow the fan quilt needed a few repairs to it after I pulled it out of the wash .. I was really disappointed to see that some of my fans didn’t get under the twill tape totally .. Next time I do this pattern, I will use a shorter stitch – I’m thinking that that might do the trick there. I was pretty upset about this turning out this way … I had maybe 10 spots that I had to fix that were just like this – maybe more as I found 2 more spots after I thought I had them all done ..

HPIM2871.jpgTo fix this, I took a light blue thread and did some zigzag stitching where it had not been tucked under .. it rather upset me that I didn’t have any of the variegated left that I used for this, but the light blue works pretty good .. I had a light blue and a medium blue that I used depending on the blues where it had not gotten tucked under the tape … It’s not to noticeable, but of course I’ll always see this .. not everyone will as I matched it pretty close – but it’s still a bummer for me

HPIM2865.jpgAs for the label on this quilt, all I’m going to do for now is put down the pertinent information and leave a space for the name, I can write that in later .. and if ends up not being named, so be it ..

NYD – 1.1.09 – finished 5.16.09
Dedicated to Mary Jean Campaigne Lambie

It does look gorgeous tho, ooboo’s not withstanding. Nice and peaceful and serene .. the quilting just sets it off just right and I am proud of the work that I did do on it, I learned a new technique and learned a few other ‘should have dones’, so I’m pleased .. bummed but pleased .. yeah I know .. they shouldn’t go together but they do .. I didn’t expect this to be perfect, but I didn’t want to have to do the cheater fix to it already before I even got to use it ..

HPIM2867.jpgI finally got a daylight pic of Kyle’s Spinners and I’ve actually handed it over to him tonite πŸ˜€ He rather liked the idea that it’s done and HIS HIS HIS πŸ˜‰ .. it was also a ‘sneaky’ way for his sheets to be changed and his room to be picked up too .. course I wouldn’t hang a quilt over his head like that .. i would never do that πŸ˜‰

So I’ve had some triumphs this weekends and some let-downs too .. but I did learn from them and that is the important thing .. and my kitty quilt will be done in the next day or two as well ..

** starts to put her balls all in the air again ..

Still Time for Quilting!

It’s rather been a whirlwind and adjustment period for me. Getting used to working again .. and not just 8 hrs a day – but for 9 hrs (minus Β½ hr lunch). Doing the 4pm – 1am shift wasn’t to bad for me .. it seemed that I still got some ME time and quilting time. I’ve just finished my first week of my new shift – 12noon – 9pm. While you’d think that that was a great shift (and it is), there’s a period of adjustment to it for me .. For 2 years, I’ve basically gotten up when I wanted and slept when I wanted .. Doing the first shift of 4 – 1 wasn’t to bad, as I didn’t go to bed until 4am anyways .. I’d get up around 11 or so and have plenty of ME time and time before work to do whatever .. My body still is sort of awake at 3:30 – 4am right now, but I can’t really get up at 11 and expect to have enough coffee in me before I leave at 11:30 for 12 noon start time .. just leaves me feeling rushed and harassed. Ultimately my goal is to be up around 8 – 9am, so I can have those few hours to do whatever I want .. I’m still working on that πŸ˜€ But it is getting better .. It’s not a lot of time, but then again, I KNEW I wouldn’t have that time anyways – hence the quilting marathon I did in February and March.

When I’ve gotten home from work this week, I’ve not really had the focus to do a blog post, or even read much email .. and it’s all still there waiting for me to read it .. and my bloglines?? oi vay! we won’t go there!! But I will read them all .. eventually for now I’m just doing some mindless clicking on facebook and doing quick emails and txt messages .. I know ..exciting, eh? LOL

HPIM2860.jpgDuring the past weeks, I’ve taken the time to watch tv with Reg and I’ve gotten a few bindings done .. you know I’ve done the spinner quilt, and the other day I finished the big fan quilt .. It’s not been washed yet, but that’s tomorrow’s task. Here’s a quick peek of it with the binding sewn down tonite. I’m hoping to get some daylight pics of this and the spinner quilt since the weather is going (I pray) to be sunny! It is a wonderful feeling to get these quilts crossed off my list! I’ve not labeled this one as yet, and am not entirely sure what I’m going to call this one. This was the NYD mystery hosted on Planet Patchwork – and this was also the same day that I found out my aunt had been killed in car crash on her way to her bday dinner with friends the nite before … I’d like to dedicate this to her, but am still struggling with the name. This has become my favourite quilt. I love the way it quilted up, has a nice feel to it (even if it does weigh more than normal) – it’s just nice and peaceful .. I’m sure a name will come to me in time. But I can always do a label with the dates on it for now and add the name later.

HPIM2858.jpgMy next project is the binding on the kitty quilt .. sorry for the blechy pic, but this is just to give you and idea of what I’m doing.

Kyle is excited that I’m working on this quilt and he keeps giving me HUGE, BROAD hints about his bed quilt and wanting to have it done … he can’t wait until I get the rest of the threads snipped of his spinner quilt and the daylight pic done .. He says his current bed covering is just to heavy and is waiting impatiently for that one πŸ˜€ oh the one he’s waiting for is the Franken’quilt’

But work is going well, I’ve not lost any customers (that I’m aware of), altho one customer with a thick heavy accent asked me if I spoke english 😐 .. I was absolutely rendered speechless, and that’s not something that happens to me often .. he ended up in the wrong department and was not wiling to answer my questions about best to direct his call .. **sigh it IS rather laughable tho .. anywho, the job isn’t boring, it is almost more challenging than I would like in one day out of every 3, but I do like it well enough .. would I rather be quilting?? you betcha .. but that just makes the time I do grab for it all that more precious to me ..

Have a great week!

Case128 – Big Fan – Binding Pile!

HPIM2840.jpgThis is actually a horrible pic, but you can get the gist of how it looks with the binding on πŸ˜€ And daylight was a relative term today with it being rainy and gloomy .. BLECH.Β  So a good daylight pic was just not going to be possible today .. or until Wednesday when it says it’ll be sunny again.Β  I think that this one is going to be my favourite out of all the ones that I’ve completed in the past 6 weeks.Β  Heh .. not even sure I can recall all that I’ve finished in this time frame – I would have to go back over my blog entries and sift thru the binding pile LOL

My goal this weekend was to do both the bigfan and the kitty convergence.Β  One of two not’s bad and I’m good with it.Β  I’m rather shying away from the math – it’ll be easy, I’m sure .. but there’s always the thing that it won’t be that niggles at the back of your brain.Β  And I’m not sure I want to exactly deal with that .. Would rather just bask in the good feeling of where I’m at with this quilt πŸ˜€Β  AND the kitty convergence hasn’t been waiting months for me to get back to it.Β  It can hold it’s kitties for a bit LOL

My allergies were beating me up pretty severe when I got up and I’m rather ‘not there’ – even now .. but we’ll see, I might get motivated to do it .. then it’s a matter of printing them out and quilting away .. not a lot of time needed as these are just 3″ borders I think and it’s just a bitty wall quilt. hmmm I might even get this one day during the week .. we’ll have to see what I’m inclined to do after work .. prolly not much with the rain being here that long .. Yesterday was such a teaser day with what we are facing now **sigh … rain rain go away .. don’t bother to come back another day!

Quilty Stuff – YIPPEE

It feels so great to have some quilty stuff done πŸ˜€ I’ve missed spending the time doing it this week. I set a goal for myself today that was quasi reachable. Granted if I hadn’t spoken with my uncle on the phone for almost 1 Β½ hrs I could have done it, but I do really enjoy talking to him, so I don’t mind reaching the goal I had set for myself.

HPIM2836.jpg

Think she missed me??

My goal was to move the bigfan quilt to the binding pile. It will make it there this weekend without a doubt! I finished shredding all the tissue off it tonite and all that needs to be done is cut the binding and attach it. As you can see the Princess Snoopervisor (Or furry mafia as a Sue in NZ calls them) decided that she was going to ‘help’. Don’t you just love the indignant look I’m getting from her .. like .. HEY .. i’m RIGHT here .. PET ME! LOL .. Yes this is the same cat that decided to hunt a centipede that was behind my head on the wall. I did manage to pick around her for a bit and then I had to convince her that it was time to move … that took a bit of coercion, as when she wants to be in your lap, she’s IN your lap .. regardless of you moving her .. she just jumps right back up. Oh see that white grocery sack next to me on the couch .. well that was the same sack that went flying and created a ticker tape parade in my living room on Sunday nite. LMBO!!!!!!

HPIM2838.jpgI am just tickled by the way that this turned out! You can see the quilting even with using a flash. This is going to take some truly stunning daylight pics tomorrow πŸ˜€ I can’t wait to see how great this is going to look in the daylight. I’m really excited about this quilt being almost done! Yes I know, I’m excited about all of them .. but this one – there’s just something about it that sings to me .. not just talks ..but sings ..

After I get this done, I’ll work on the math for the borders on the kitty convergence and maybe get that one going too .. we’ll have to see as that one is going to take some meticulous shredding to get all the tissue off.

I finally managed to lose some weight this week.Β  I’ve been fluctuating up and down a pound or two for the past month .. matter of fact it was a 4lb difference from last nite to tonite .. I was just soooo tickled to see that and it gives me encouragement that I’m doing the right thing and to stick with it!Β  Part of it I’m sure is eating more often and drinking more water ..

On tipnut.com they published an article with links for knittable and crochetable swiffer covers with a recommendation to use acrylic yarn .. I’ve a TON of one skeins and these would be perfect me thinks .. The one pictured on this page is crocheted, but there are links for knittable ones .. I’ve just not checked them out yet – but wanted to share.Β  Reusable & Reversible Swiffer Sock

I hope everyone is having gorgeous weather – we are having .. I know I should have done some yard work, but my quilts were calling πŸ˜€

Fan n Kitties Antics

With Sunday being my last day of ‘freedom’ as it were, I was in a minor frenzy to get stuff done. I wanted to finish the quilting on the big fan mystery and also quilt up the kitty convergence too. I was rather all over the map with trying to settle and start on one or the other. heh .. quilter ADD LOLΒ  Oh and course I didn’t get as much sleep on Sunday as I wanted .. You’ll find out why at the bottom of my post .. bloody cat n bugs!!

HPIM2831.jpgFor the kitty convergence I wanted something rather abstract as this quilt is smaller. The quilting was just to be a compliment not the end all to be all .. I wanted a motif that was looser, but failed rather miserably in that .. but I am happy with the results .. this is a really cool looking motif .. it’s abstract but tulips – which matches the tulip fabric that I used and creates some interesting lines and flow in the quilt. I had one idea for the border, but by the time it was all said and done .. I just didn’t want to do it .. I was rather cross-eyed from HPIM2832.jpgdoing this motif, so I left it for now .. chances are I’ll do what I originally planned, but I just didn’t want to do the math for it to make the borders fit right as I’ll miter the design in instead of doing horizontal / vertical like I normally do. This is going to be interesting getting the tissue off this one .. I might just take Diana’s suggestion of a small toothed comb and a vacuum LOL .. egads what a mess THAT would be LOL

HPIM2834.jpgI finished quilting it on Sunday nite and started to do a bit of shredding of the tissue as well. I didn’t get any pictures until today as you couldn’t see the quilting very well with a flash pic. I do love how the quilting looks on this .. sort of creates waves like on the quilt ..

HPIM2833.jpgI did run out of the variegated blue about 1 row away from being finished but I had a blue that I was originally going to use before I found the blue, so I wasn’t too freaked out .. and this quilt is staying with me .. so it doesn’t have to be perfect – heh .. good thing as there are mistakes in this quilt LOL .. but I know they are there and I learned with this quilt .. so it’s all good. Here’s a nice shot of the quilting in a Continue reading

The Devil is in the Details …

Sounds rather ominous doesn’t it? Specially after the frustration that I dealt with yesterday. You know .. I never could understand that statement .. “The Devil is in the Details” To my way of thinking, the details are what makes anything you do succeed, and well they are Good – because the details are what makes the whole .. So if they are Good, what’s the Devil got to do with them .. I just could never wrap my head around it .. well tonite I found myself thinking that on more than one occasion :\ ..

According to wisegeek.com ” .. boil[s] down to the fact that it is often the small details of something which make it difficult or challenging.”

Yeah well okay – I get it now ..

Phrasefinder.com has two versions .. The Devil is in the details … God is in the details ..

DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS – The “Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings” by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996) shows this phrase as a variation of “God is in the details – Whatever one does should be done thoroughly; details are important. The saying is generally attributed to Gustave Flaubert (1821-80), who is often quoted as saying, ‘Le bon Dieu est dans le detail’ (God is in the details)…

Barleby.com has this meaning “Even the grandest project depends on the success of the smallest components.

‑ This version of the proverb often implies that the details might cause failure. A more positive version is β€œGod is in the details,” …”

Here’s a few examples of my Devil in the Details spots .. there’s more of them than you see here, but if you notice, they are all in small detailed areas – AND where the tissue ends and starts .. usually in the middle of the baptist fan variation .. not good planning on my part .. also lack of experience .. I’ll get better with time ..

HPIM2823.jpg HPIM2824.jpg HPIM2829.jpg

You know, if I had tried my tissue paper method on this quilt first, it would have never been developed beyond that first attempt .. with my posting that this quilt seemed heavy, another member of OST (Birdie) piped up (is that tweeted up??) and said that hers was heavy too and she was fighting her quilt .. she also mentioned that she didn’t cut the excess fabric off the back. Over ΒΎ of this quilt has 2 layers of fabric which equals added weight .. I would NEVER have thought to have done that at all .. So thank you for that one Birdie!!

I was right, once I got past the halfway point, it was easier to quilt as the majority of the quilt was not rolled up onto my machine bed and interfering with the movement of my hands .. instead the tissue was now on the right and with my added pressure (Third Law of Motion), was shredding the tissue before I could even ‘use’ it!! I tried to just pin half and then put my hand under the tissue to guide my quilt .. that still shredded the tissue .. then I tried, putting the sheets on one-by-one .. well that wasn’t quite working either .. **sigh THEN I thought of my spray baste πŸ˜€ It says right on the can that it can be used to hold tissue patterns in place πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ .. well that worked quite well and it took no time at all to finish the quilting .. this may cause some issues when it comes to shred time .. that’s okay ..I can try Diana’s advice of using a comb to shred the tissue and then vacuum it – or I can let it soak for a bit to let the tissue dissolve .. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it ..

Spray Basted Tissue

But the good news is – case128 is now quilted! I think I’m going to call this Curse of the Big Fan .. we’ll have to see πŸ˜€ Tomorrow (Today??), I’ll quilt the kitty convergence quilt and then do the bindings after that .. well after I shred the tissue that is .. or rather what’s left of it at this point :\

**Throws Paws in Air …

HPIM2819.jpgThis is almost half way thru the quilting on case128. Essentially 1 row shy of it, and my goal for today. I give up. I’ve had enough for one day! Seriously!

It’s been a battle of sorts all day .. not a HUGE battle, but more like a struggle / contest of wills ..and those can be just as tiring as battles and wars – specially when they are waged over a several hour period. I guess the first one was when I was piecing the batting – I sewed the long and short sides together wihtout realizing it until I had way more left than the other .. RIPIT RIPIT start again .. I wasn’t smart about where my pattern ends on the sheet .. so i’m creating a minor mess of sorts with the tissue there – I finally gave up trying to follow it and just winged it .. hey it’s freemotion after all.

HPIM2820.jpgSince I’m using a cotton batt, this quilt is heavier ..so of course I’m having to apply more pressure with my hands (Thank God I use gloves!!) to move the quilt along .. and of course Newton’s Third Law of Motion “states that any time a force acts from one object to another, there is an equal force acting back on the original object. If you pull on a rope, therefore, the rope is pulling back on you as well. “ Meaning in this case – exerting more pressure causes the tissue paper to RIP. This is just one of the few battlefields where a contest of wills was waged. Good thing by this time I had gotten into a rhythm and it was easy enough to fill in the ‘holes’ so to speak. I didn’t really remember this issue when doing my kitty quilt tho – granted this quilt is bigger – ergo – heavier.

As I stated already, my goal was half way – I think a realistic enough goal and easily doable! I think that someone, somewhere is trying to tell me something .. I really do! Just before I finish the 2nd to last row, maybe 4″ shy of it, the thread in my bobbin runs out .. Okay .. not a problem .. NUTS .. all my bobbins are empty now .. so I grab my bobbins and head into the cat cave to spin up a few more. Okay .. get back and start sewing again .. 2″ left in the FINAL line, and my spool runs dry .. 😐 Are you kidding me??? **sigh Okay .. get the other spool, thread the machine, lock my stitches and finish that row. Check the back and see the mess from the dry spool and NO tension – fix that .. By this time, I’ve been seeing mistakes get made and just kept on going .. SInce I”m rolling the quilt into the bed area, it’s getting harder and harder to move freely and there’s all sorts of bumps and jiggles as I get closer to the middle ..

HPIM2821.jpgI was right here .. I had cut my thread at the bottom and was about to lock my stitches when I see the thread slip thru my fingers and swoop thru the hole in the needle .. 😐 THAT’S IT! I’m done! I’ve had enough .. So here I stopped .. and this will be waiting for me tomorrow – whenever I get back from being kidnapped and praying I won’t be to tired for this .. but I just can’t be .. this is my final countdown this weekend .. so this and a few other things have to be done.

The nice thing is, it’s a new day and a fresh start! I’ll finish this last pass with no issues, flip the quilt and it’ll get easier and easier – Today I’m tired – I didn’t sleep good last nite (I actually had a few nitemares??!!) so my sleep was broken and doing this quilt is hard-er work … Not my normal zoom zoom ..

Case128 Big Fan – 1 | Grace – 0

Until tomorrow then I win πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ and do the kitty convergence too – that’s basted πŸ˜€
