Japanese Mystery BOM – January February

20150202_20595620150202_210145Everyone was so incredibly helpful with me getting my head wrapped around this mystery.  Thank you to everyone that emailed me, commented or posted on the list-serve in answer to screams and whimpers for help.  I was given information to read, and I had already done my google searches for images – but wasn’t trusting my instinct.  I decided to trust my instincts finally.  I’ve always have a good sense for colours – balancing between complimentary and harmonious colours.  Of course laying my whole stash out almost did more harm than good, but I frittered it down to small prints and what colours I want to use and it should fall into place.  It generally does.  The pic on the left shows the fabrics that I’ll use for the background colour – the one on the right is without.  I’m not likely to use all those prints in my blocks, but I have the option to use whatever ones I want and that’s all that matters.   Not sure what’s happening with my camera lately, but my shots aren’t turning out as well as they used to. Fabric Fondling

I‘ve not sewn a stitch, but I did fondle fabric today 😀 WHOOO HOOOO .. quilterhappydance!! I’ve been feeling the time slip away from me for the ArtIllusion Mystery .. I need to get my quilt top, backing and binding in – preferably 2 weeks ago, but it’ll be going in the next day or so at least 🙂 Today I went shopping in the states with my dad and after the drudgery part was done, I headed over to Joann’s and walked into a sale – good thing as I didn’t have my coupons, nor even looked at them lately .. My sole purpose was to get fabric for the binding, dye, and backing fabric. Mission Accomplished!

HPIM2968.jpgYou should have seen me standing in front of the quilter’s fabrics at Joann’s – hehehehe .. I hadn’t had a chance to look at my quilt or even measure it lately – so I’m wracking my poor work-fried brain to try and remember what brights I had used in my quilt 😦 I could remember oranges and blues and purples and greens .. and I did even seen a few fabrics there that I KNOW are in my stash .. but do you think that I could remember what fabrics I had put in this quilt .. and of course I didn’t have a picture of it on my phone .. so I opted for orange .. and I knew I had a ton of different oranges in my quilt … of course I couldn’t decide so I grabbed 3 different ones 🙂 and they were on sale .. so even better for me! I also grabbed some orange dye for the backing .. you can see part of the backing there – yes it’s a whole piece .. I bought 119″ wide and went from there – gotta love cheating! Oh and course I did all the math for how much I would need for binding and backing while standing in line LOL … That was the easy part!

HPIM2970.jpgNormally on Monday, I would have gone to Kyle’s ball game, but since there’s an issue with the car right now, and we only have 2 bikes and 3 people, I figured I would stay home and just play with my fabrics – washing the binding fabrics and then dyeing my backing .. I forgot how much fun that is 😀 I’m not 100% totally pleased with the way the backing turned out – but it’ll do. And it was a LOT of fun! I am sorry I missed his ball game, but I really did need this creative outlet – just to do some GRACE stuff!

I opted against the bright orange on the left of the previous picture. My choices were between the floral with orange in it and greens and reds and creams .. and the medium orange. It was a hard choice … and normally I wouldn’t have made up my mind until after it was quilted, but this one is being sent away to be quilted for the book, so I don’t have that luxury this time. I went back and forth and back and forth and just couldn’t decide to save my life.

HPIM2972.jpgThen I finally started to think (neat trick,eh?) I started to think, I knew I wanted a binding that pulled all the colours / elements together. So I started to look harder at the one floral one .. that seemed to fit more with the rest of the fabrics that I used for the background and it does have reds, oranges, greens and creams in .. so when I started to think like that, it wasn’t so hard a choice afterall! I really did want to frame this with a darker more subdued fabric.

On a more personal front, the end is near for this 2 – 11PM shift from Hell. I sooo canNOT wait! it’ll be nice to get a life back again! I’ve my shift bid here and am working on it – they’re due by the 23rd and I definitely plan to have it handed it! Just hope my score card stays good enough so that I can get a better shift that will allow me to have some modicum of a life … even if it is just a wee smidge of one 🙂 Happy Happy Joy Joy

I’ve also caved and we are getting a whole new internet, phone and cable tv provider. The super slow speeds that I’ve been contending with lately have put me in no end of a panty twister – and with all I’ve gone thru with this provider, I wasn’t in the mood to put my big girl pants on anymore. And reg and his tv .. it’s as bad as me and my internet – nevermind that we are missing all the Tigers games, and football season is coming up .. last season was bad enough with not getting all the games we wanted to watch – plus with this new service, my phone will actually be cheaper .. It’ll be nice to have a speedy internet connection 🙂 and the games we want to watch – Let’s just hope that it delivers what it says it will .. we’ll find out next Tuesday on our install date. I can just see us now .. Reg will be flicking thru the channels like an addict and trying to pry me away from my keyboard might be problematic ..

Life gets busy

Right now that feels like the understatement of the century! It’s been a bit since I’ve done anything that I feel is worthwhile blogging. Lately all I seem to do is work and mindless clicking on facebook after work. I’ve not really been to inclined to even hand sew after work to do my bindings as I just want to veg and do mindless sit still stuff .. But that’s all right .. I know that I’ll feel the urge and then jump all over it like I normally do 😀

I do have some quilty stuff to share tho ..
hpim2807.jpgRemember this quilt? I entered it into a contest to be the pattern cover for the National Quilters Day Mystery Hunt by Anilee Creations. Well I finally heard the other day .. No I didn’t win, BUT, what they are doing is going to publish a book with the pattern and the quilts that everyone made .. isn’t that cool! I’m just rather awestruck by it all!! I just have to supply the backing and the binding. Since this quilt is so feminine, I think I’ll do some hand dyed yellow for the backing and see what I can come up with for the binding .. maybe more of the same?? Not sure as this was a scrappy quilt, and am unlikely to have anymore of my lighter colours kicking around .. or even the darks that I used .. so I’ll have to lay it out and fiddle with fabrics … ohhhh ahhhh playing with fabric!!! Sweet There’s 7 quilts that are going to be included .. not sure if these were the runner ups or everyone that entered a top – either way .. I think it’s awesome!

HPIM2899HPIM2897For the past month, my days off usually consisted of rain .. so my back veggie garden didn’t get worked on at all! I sure didn’t feel like playing in mud puddles on my day off, that’s for sure! Poor thing … not sure if I am going to plant anything in there .. but I’m not going to leave it weed choked which it seriously was But before I was even going to consider tackling this, my front garden needed just a few more things done to it before I would be happy. As it stood, the 8 o’clock’s i had planted from seed were coming up nicely, mum’s lilies are about to bloom and my goldmun speria is all flowered. I needed a border flower so I picked up some light purple (yes I said purple .. shock surprise), and wanted to lay some cedar mulch down. Happy happy joy joy .. I got that done today 😀 😀 Yup that made me VERY pleased to say the least.

HPIM2900Now for the back .. while reg did the ribs on the grill, I started to yank out the weeds in the back .. Reg jumped in and helped too! Thank God for small mercies! heh .. and course we saved some for Kyle too 😉 This was supposed to be his job 2 weeks ago and for some strange reason (known only to a teenage mind), it just didn’t get done .. so I put him to work 😀 Muhahahahahah – Doesn’t he just look THRILLED! He’s a bit left to do, but he’s got the rest of the week to do it.

HPIM2898So I’ve managed to get a lot done today, including watching Kyle’s baseball game too … oh and they won .. I’ve not a clue how they managed it, but they did .. woo hooo … so now I get to watch my garden fill out and bloom with dark purple, (gee there’s purple again!!), light purple, dark pink, white and yellow (mum’s lilies) I think that it’s going to look GREAT when it’s finally all in bloom and growing nicely. Curse this stupid weather .. today was the first ‘hot’ day we’ve really had and it was a great to work outside in it .. and of course ‘something’ is growing and driving my allergies to distraction – so while our summer appears to have started about 5 weeks later, I’m sure hoping that the fall and winter start later as well .. I LOVE spring and summer and am seriously starting to feel like I’m being robbed 😉

Crossed Off Items

Amazingly enough, I managed to get quite a bit of my goals accomplished this weekend! **kittyhappydance for me!! I didn’t get them all done, but that’s okay, the rest can be worked on by the guys over the next 5 days (uh huh we’ll see).. Yesterday I wrote

I start my weekend now (I’ve tues and wed for May for Kyle’s confirmation / rehearsal) and my goals are modest .. weed the front garden, plant my seeds, convince reg or kyle to dig up the back veggie garden and plant there, wash my fan quilt, stitch the binding on the kitty quilt and maybe get some laundry done if Kyle’s not taken over the washer again .. oh and try to avoid getting kidnapped for groceries and whatnot 😀

Out of that list, I did the front garden, planted my flower seeds, washed (and repaired) the fan quilt, took daylight pics of the fan quilt AND the spinner quilt, and have just over 1 side of binding on my kitty quilt to do. And during this time, managed to attend a meeting a Kyle’s school for his grade 8 trip and graduation and confirmation rehearsal – plus buy him dress shoes! So i’ good about the veggie garden not getting done, that can be dug up in the next few days .. I don’t have plants for it yet, so it wasn’t that critical for me to do.

HPIM2863.jpgNow the fan quilt needed a few repairs to it after I pulled it out of the wash .. I was really disappointed to see that some of my fans didn’t get under the twill tape totally .. Next time I do this pattern, I will use a shorter stitch – I’m thinking that that might do the trick there. I was pretty upset about this turning out this way … I had maybe 10 spots that I had to fix that were just like this – maybe more as I found 2 more spots after I thought I had them all done ..

HPIM2871.jpgTo fix this, I took a light blue thread and did some zigzag stitching where it had not been tucked under .. it rather upset me that I didn’t have any of the variegated left that I used for this, but the light blue works pretty good .. I had a light blue and a medium blue that I used depending on the blues where it had not gotten tucked under the tape … It’s not to noticeable, but of course I’ll always see this .. not everyone will as I matched it pretty close – but it’s still a bummer for me

HPIM2865.jpgAs for the label on this quilt, all I’m going to do for now is put down the pertinent information and leave a space for the name, I can write that in later .. and if ends up not being named, so be it ..

“Case128 – The Big Fan Mystery” by Merry Mayhem
NYD – 1.1.09 – finished 5.16.09
Dedicated to Mary Jean Campaigne Lambie

It does look gorgeous tho, ooboo’s not withstanding. Nice and peaceful and serene .. the quilting just sets it off just right and I am proud of the work that I did do on it, I learned a new technique and learned a few other ‘should have dones’, so I’m pleased .. bummed but pleased .. yeah I know .. they shouldn’t go together but they do .. I didn’t expect this to be perfect, but I didn’t want to have to do the cheater fix to it already before I even got to use it ..

HPIM2867.jpgI finally got a daylight pic of Kyle’s Spinners and I’ve actually handed it over to him tonite 😀 He rather liked the idea that it’s done and HIS HIS HIS 😉 .. it was also a ‘sneaky’ way for his sheets to be changed and his room to be picked up too .. course I wouldn’t hang a quilt over his head like that .. i would never do that 😉

So I’ve had some triumphs this weekends and some let-downs too .. but I did learn from them and that is the important thing .. and my kitty quilt will be done in the next day or two as well ..

** starts to put her balls all in the air again ..

Still Time for Quilting!

It’s rather been a whirlwind and adjustment period for me. Getting used to working again .. and not just 8 hrs a day – but for 9 hrs (minus ½ hr lunch). Doing the 4pm – 1am shift wasn’t to bad for me .. it seemed that I still got some ME time and quilting time. I’ve just finished my first week of my new shift – 12noon – 9pm. While you’d think that that was a great shift (and it is), there’s a period of adjustment to it for me .. For 2 years, I’ve basically gotten up when I wanted and slept when I wanted .. Doing the first shift of 4 – 1 wasn’t to bad, as I didn’t go to bed until 4am anyways .. I’d get up around 11 or so and have plenty of ME time and time before work to do whatever .. My body still is sort of awake at 3:30 – 4am right now, but I can’t really get up at 11 and expect to have enough coffee in me before I leave at 11:30 for 12 noon start time .. just leaves me feeling rushed and harassed. Ultimately my goal is to be up around 8 – 9am, so I can have those few hours to do whatever I want .. I’m still working on that 😀 But it is getting better .. It’s not a lot of time, but then again, I KNEW I wouldn’t have that time anyways – hence the quilting marathon I did in February and March.

When I’ve gotten home from work this week, I’ve not really had the focus to do a blog post, or even read much email .. and it’s all still there waiting for me to read it .. and my bloglines?? oi vay! we won’t go there!! But I will read them all .. eventually for now I’m just doing some mindless clicking on facebook and doing quick emails and txt messages .. I know ..exciting, eh? LOL

HPIM2860.jpgDuring the past weeks, I’ve taken the time to watch tv with Reg and I’ve gotten a few bindings done .. you know I’ve done the spinner quilt, and the other day I finished the big fan quilt .. It’s not been washed yet, but that’s tomorrow’s task. Here’s a quick peek of it with the binding sewn down tonite. I’m hoping to get some daylight pics of this and the spinner quilt since the weather is going (I pray) to be sunny! It is a wonderful feeling to get these quilts crossed off my list! I’ve not labeled this one as yet, and am not entirely sure what I’m going to call this one. This was the NYD mystery hosted on Planet Patchwork – and this was also the same day that I found out my aunt had been killed in car crash on her way to her bday dinner with friends the nite before … I’d like to dedicate this to her, but am still struggling with the name. This has become my favourite quilt. I love the way it quilted up, has a nice feel to it (even if it does weigh more than normal) – it’s just nice and peaceful .. I’m sure a name will come to me in time. But I can always do a label with the dates on it for now and add the name later.

HPIM2858.jpgMy next project is the binding on the kitty quilt .. sorry for the blechy pic, but this is just to give you and idea of what I’m doing.

Kyle is excited that I’m working on this quilt and he keeps giving me HUGE, BROAD hints about his bed quilt and wanting to have it done … he can’t wait until I get the rest of the threads snipped of his spinner quilt and the daylight pic done .. He says his current bed covering is just to heavy and is waiting impatiently for that one 😀 oh the one he’s waiting for is the Franken’quilt’

But work is going well, I’ve not lost any customers (that I’m aware of), altho one customer with a thick heavy accent asked me if I spoke english 😐 .. I was absolutely rendered speechless, and that’s not something that happens to me often .. he ended up in the wrong department and was not wiling to answer my questions about best to direct his call .. **sigh it IS rather laughable tho .. anywho, the job isn’t boring, it is almost more challenging than I would like in one day out of every 3, but I do like it well enough .. would I rather be quilting?? you betcha .. but that just makes the time I do grab for it all that more precious to me ..

Have a great week!

Case128 – Big Fan – Binding Pile!

HPIM2840.jpgThis is actually a horrible pic, but you can get the gist of how it looks with the binding on 😀 And daylight was a relative term today with it being rainy and gloomy .. BLECH.  So a good daylight pic was just not going to be possible today .. or until Wednesday when it says it’ll be sunny again.  I think that this one is going to be my favourite out of all the ones that I’ve completed in the past 6 weeks.  Heh .. not even sure I can recall all that I’ve finished in this time frame – I would have to go back over my blog entries and sift thru the binding pile LOL

My goal this weekend was to do both the bigfan and the kitty convergence.  One of two not’s bad and I’m good with it.  I’m rather shying away from the math – it’ll be easy, I’m sure .. but there’s always the thing that it won’t be that niggles at the back of your brain.  And I’m not sure I want to exactly deal with that .. Would rather just bask in the good feeling of where I’m at with this quilt 😀  AND the kitty convergence hasn’t been waiting months for me to get back to it.  It can hold it’s kitties for a bit LOL

My allergies were beating me up pretty severe when I got up and I’m rather ‘not there’ – even now .. but we’ll see, I might get motivated to do it .. then it’s a matter of printing them out and quilting away .. not a lot of time needed as these are just 3″ borders I think and it’s just a bitty wall quilt. hmmm I might even get this one day during the week .. we’ll have to see what I’m inclined to do after work .. prolly not much with the rain being here that long .. Yesterday was such a teaser day with what we are facing now **sigh … rain rain go away .. don’t bother to come back another day!

Quilty Stuff – YIPPEE

It feels so great to have some quilty stuff done 😀 I’ve missed spending the time doing it this week. I set a goal for myself today that was quasi reachable. Granted if I hadn’t spoken with my uncle on the phone for almost 1 ½ hrs I could have done it, but I do really enjoy talking to him, so I don’t mind reaching the goal I had set for myself.

HPIM2836.jpg

Think she missed me??

My goal was to move the bigfan quilt to the binding pile. It will make it there this weekend without a doubt! I finished shredding all the tissue off it tonite and all that needs to be done is cut the binding and attach it. As you can see the Princess Snoopervisor (Or furry mafia as a Sue in NZ calls them) decided that she was going to ‘help’. Don’t you just love the indignant look I’m getting from her .. like .. HEY .. i’m RIGHT here .. PET ME! LOL .. Yes this is the same cat that decided to hunt a centipede that was behind my head on the wall. I did manage to pick around her for a bit and then I had to convince her that it was time to move … that took a bit of coercion, as when she wants to be in your lap, she’s IN your lap .. regardless of you moving her .. she just jumps right back up. Oh see that white grocery sack next to me on the couch .. well that was the same sack that went flying and created a ticker tape parade in my living room on Sunday nite. LMBO!!!!!!

HPIM2838.jpgI am just tickled by the way that this turned out! You can see the quilting even with using a flash. This is going to take some truly stunning daylight pics tomorrow 😀 I can’t wait to see how great this is going to look in the daylight. I’m really excited about this quilt being almost done! Yes I know, I’m excited about all of them .. but this one – there’s just something about it that sings to me .. not just talks ..but sings ..

After I get this done, I’ll work on the math for the borders on the kitty convergence and maybe get that one going too .. we’ll have to see as that one is going to take some meticulous shredding to get all the tissue off.

I finally managed to lose some weight this week.  I’ve been fluctuating up and down a pound or two for the past month .. matter of fact it was a 4lb difference from last nite to tonite .. I was just soooo tickled to see that and it gives me encouragement that I’m doing the right thing and to stick with it!  Part of it I’m sure is eating more often and drinking more water ..

On tipnut.com they published an article with links for knittable and crochetable swiffer covers with a recommendation to use acrylic yarn .. I’ve a TON of one skeins and these would be perfect me thinks .. The one pictured on this page is crocheted, but there are links for knittable ones .. I’ve just not checked them out yet – but wanted to share.  Reusable & Reversible Swiffer Sock

I hope everyone is having gorgeous weather – we are having .. I know I should have done some yard work, but my quilts were calling 😀
