It was devilishly hard to cut into the fabric I dyed yesterday LOL I must’ve stood there for a good 20 minutes if not longer with my rotary cutter in hand willing myself to make the cut. I don’t know what it is about us fabric freaks / lovers / hoarders, but we do not like to cut into fabric we love LOL. But cut into I did and I really do like the way it turned out. And my favourite is still the leaves one on the right. I will have enough to finish the last 12 blocks Yeah!!! I am thinking about using random blank blocks as fillers through this help emphasis motion with the curves – least that’s what I’m seeing in my mind – I just hope that I can translate that from my mind to my quilt. Maybe a bit of random applique that also shows motion – butterflies, dragonflies, birds, twining leaves?? I see it, but it’s not definite yet. I’ve put so much time and effort into this quilt, I want it to be the best it can be and with minimal mistakes Continue reading
Between the hacking and coughing today I had a blast playing with my dyes, fabric paints, wax and glue. Although the glue version had to be nixed LOL First thing I did was the textile paint on the yellow with leaves and sunset greeny with paw prints and then I ran out of paint PFFT!!!! I wasn’t too worried as I did (operative word .. DID) have green dye.. The package I had of Dylon would do about 2 – 2 1/2 yards of fabric, so I started to hunt around for fabric to add to this. I did do 3/4 yard of white muslin that I had here for just that purpose I scrunched it up to tight and / or didn’t mix it up good enough at the beginning so it’s more white than I wanted it to be, but I can always do another batik with green when I buy more. I did a bit of that on the yellow leaves and the paw prints – i really like the effect it gave me and want to play with that more. I’ve always loved hand dyeing and this is just the icing on the cake for me. Continue reading
The beginning of my weekend is starting out as planned – ish! I hope it stays this way!! I feel a bug coming on and I’m doing my best to ignore it and hope that it stays to a dull roar so I can enjoy the next three days and not be sick … I swear there is nothing worse than being sick on your days off and that’s usually the way it happens. Well I don’t miss work that way Continue reading
Break Out the Crayon Box
Sometimes an idea for surface design is so simple, you wonder why you never thought of it before. That’s how I felt when I first saw Rose Hughes’ tutorial on using crayons—the kind kids use, nothing fancy—as a resist method with fabric paint.
Fabric painting with crayon resist
by Rose Hughes.
The crayon color, glitter, or metallic shine remains on the fabric once it is pressed, adding color and sparkle to the overall design.
Here’s Rose’s tutorial, from the April/May 2012 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.
I‘ve not sewn a stitch, but I did fondle fabric today 😀 WHOOO HOOOO .. quilterhappydance!! I’ve been feeling the time slip away from me for the ArtIllusion Mystery .. I need to get my quilt top, backing and binding in – preferably 2 weeks ago, but it’ll be going in the next day or so at least 🙂 Today I went shopping in the states with my dad and after the drudgery part was done, I headed over to Joann’s and walked into a sale – good thing as I didn’t have my coupons, nor even looked at them lately .. My sole purpose was to get fabric for the binding, dye, and backing fabric. Mission Accomplished!
You should have seen me standing in front of the quilter’s fabrics at Joann’s – hehehehe .. I hadn’t had a chance to look at my quilt or even measure it lately – so I’m wracking my poor work-fried brain to try and remember what brights I had used in my quilt 😦 I could remember oranges and blues and purples and greens .. and I did even seen a few fabrics there that I KNOW are in my stash .. but do you think that I could remember what fabrics I had put in this quilt .. and of course I didn’t have a picture of it on my phone .. so I opted for orange .. and I knew I had a ton of different oranges in my quilt … of course I couldn’t decide so I grabbed 3 different ones 🙂 and they were on sale .. so even better for me! I also grabbed some orange dye for the backing .. you can see part of the backing there – yes it’s a whole piece .. I bought 119″ wide and went from there – gotta love cheating! Oh and course I did all the math for how much I would need for binding and backing while standing in line LOL … That was the easy part!
Normally on Monday, I would have gone to Kyle’s ball game, but since there’s an issue with the car right now, and we only have 2 bikes and 3 people, I figured I would stay home and just play with my fabrics – washing the binding fabrics and then dyeing my backing .. I forgot how much fun that is 😀 I’m not 100% totally pleased with the way the backing turned out – but it’ll do. And it was a LOT of fun! I am sorry I missed his ball game, but I really did need this creative outlet – just to do some GRACE stuff!
I opted against the bright orange on the left of the previous picture. My choices were between the floral with orange in it and greens and reds and creams .. and the medium orange. It was a hard choice … and normally I wouldn’t have made up my mind until after it was quilted, but this one is being sent away to be quilted for the book, so I don’t have that luxury this time. I went back and forth and back and forth and just couldn’t decide to save my life.
Then I finally started to think (neat trick,eh?) I started to think, I knew I wanted a binding that pulled all the colours / elements together. So I started to look harder at the one floral one .. that seemed to fit more with the rest of the fabrics that I used for the background and it does have reds, oranges, greens and creams in .. so when I started to think like that, it wasn’t so hard a choice afterall! I really did want to frame this with a darker more subdued fabric.
On a more personal front, the end is near for this 2 – 11PM shift from Hell. I sooo canNOT wait! it’ll be nice to get a life back again! I’ve my shift bid here and am working on it – they’re due by the 23rd and I definitely plan to have it handed it! Just hope my score card stays good enough so that I can get a better shift that will allow me to have some modicum of a life … even if it is just a wee smidge of one 🙂 Happy Happy Joy Joy
I’ve also caved and we are getting a whole new internet, phone and cable tv provider. The super slow speeds that I’ve been contending with lately have put me in no end of a panty twister – and with all I’ve gone thru with this provider, I wasn’t in the mood to put my big girl pants on anymore. And reg and his tv .. it’s as bad as me and my internet – nevermind that we are missing all the Tigers games, and football season is coming up .. last season was bad enough with not getting all the games we wanted to watch – plus with this new service, my phone will actually be cheaper .. It’ll be nice to have a speedy internet connection 🙂 and the games we want to watch – Let’s just hope that it delivers what it says it will .. we’ll find out next Tuesday on our install date. I can just see us now .. Reg will be flicking thru the channels like an addict and trying to pry me away from my keyboard might be problematic ..
Challenge Friday is what today should be designated – while it wasn’t a bad day – it sure had it’s fair share of crud .. starting with the creepy crud coming back (not like it every left, eh?) But today it decided to show up full force with coughing, sneezing, stuffiness and a lack of voice and minimal energy .. I’m so bloody tired of this thing … I do NOT have the time for the crud right now ..
But regardless of how I felt, I did resolve to get “something” ANYTHING done today for cmas gifts. With that goal in mind, I took the easiest task (I really should have known better) of over-dying the backing for the spinner quilt – I’m glad that i checked the dylon site for this one, because this wasn’t a cold water dye – nope – this was a multipurpose dye. I’m pretty sure I’ve used these type before, but do not ever remember having to do this on the stove .. my poor stock pot – the only pot big enough (besides my canner) for this – So I printed off the directions for using this dye and followed the directions … Good thing this only had to simmer for 20 minutes .. I was pretty hard pressed to keep it from ‘simmering’ over the top of the pot – and of course with the boiling action, it was filling up the fabric with air and raising it over the surface of the water. That simmering action managed to not let me have the usual hand-dyed look that I love – instead, it’s almost a solid colour .. this is a mixed blessing for me – it’s not longer gray, but it’s certainly not what I was looking forward to – it IS blue .. hard to tell in this photo as it was not taken in daylight.
Will I use this particular dye from dylon again – oh HELL no! It warns in the instructions “Results are not colourfast, so dyed items should be turned inside out and washed separately. “ Now answer me this – when you dye something, it goes through and through the dyed fabric .. so seriously folks, what will turning it inside change?? I so swear to God .. some ppl’s kids pfft. And why would you have a dye that isn’t colour-fast??? It defies explanation and boggles the mind .. and today it didn’t take much to do that to me …
Dad finally made it to the PO Box and my quiltpro program was there .. I’m all tickled and happy – even almost looking forward to moving files over again and then finally taking down the old puter .. I put the disk in … wait … wait some more .. wait .. okay .. my system is NOT seeing this disk .. I don’t see my normal little pinhole for emergency ejections on this new mac .. okay reboot 😉 Maybe it’ll spit it out or read it on reboot .. well it did read it and see it .. I’m all happy that it’s there and I’m basically like .. okay .. this’ll work .. I double click the installer and I get an error message .. (OH judaspriest!!!) Bad disk **sigh .. so I pull up my reciept and dial the 800 number .. well geeze .. not in service .. wtf?? There’s only 2 numbers there and one’s a fax – Off to the site I go .. AHA .. a non 800 number for me call .. I call and get through .. to voice message .. ya’ll can see where this is going can’t you?? yup .. their hours are Monday – Friday from 9 – 5 CST .. BLOODYHELL it’s 6:30 EST! **sigh .. back burner this until Monday .. DRAT!
After reg got home from his game, I gave up – I’d had enough and really couldn’t take any more – his team won btw 😀 that is just wayyy to cool .. but anywho .. so we sit to watch the pistons and I decide I’m going to knit .. that went well! A row that I managed to go ‘backwards’ on the seed stitch, but other than that .. I’m pretty pleased with it .. I’m actually on the foot part of the sock and only 38 more rounds to go until I start with the toe **SMILES
Kyle went out shopping with my dad for Reg and I – My dad also bought him his cmas present .. I’m wishing I had gotten pics .. he picked out some black jeans, 2 polo shirts with that retro look and a hoody! My dad was impressed with the way he handled himself .. so there is hope for him yet. My dad wrecked one of my Cmas presents tho – He was talking to me about their shopping trip and asked if Kyle had given me the tea yet .. I’m like what tea?? Then I say – I think you just wrecked my cmas gift – he’s like, No I didn’t .. well I was right and he did – not my main gift, but still something he would have put in my stocking I’m sure – poor Kyle .. he’s worried about my sleep patterns (yeah I know .. what sleep patterns) and bought me a natural tea that induces relaxation and sleep .. It’s from teaopia and it’s part of their wellness blend .. he talked with the lady there and made sure it wasn’t to sweet or had caffeine .. This has papaya (and I LOVE LOVE LOVE papaya) with some honey and a few other goodies – well kyle took the wrecked surprise in stride and made me a cup of tea right then! It was good too! I think he’ll be making me a cuppa when he’s off for bed for the next bit. Gotta love the kid 😀 His heart is in the right spot
Welp – tomorrow is another day, we’ll get our cmas village set up – oh I did get the nativity scene set up 😀 I could have cracked my dad tho .. reg and kyle just LOVE the tree (and reg usually doesn’t get excited bout this stuff – normally, it’s like, it looks good and that’s it) – my dad goes .. why don’t you put a star on it – I just looked at him .. I’m like .. him of all ppl – could he be that oblvious about the angel?? Wish mum was here to smack him one .. he’s the tact of a bull in a china shop some days .. ah well .. ilovemydad, ilovemydad, ilovemydad … and I honestly can’t remember him saying a word about whether it looked nice or not .. (@@) <- rolling eyes!!
I’m sitting here trying to think if there was anything else, like I could really want anything else at this point?? nope – letting it go
Have a great day / nite! 😀
I think I’m feeling better, altho I still have that ick feeling in the back of my sinuses, I do feel more energized (altho nothing like normal) and am plotting cutting Erica’s borders – so this is a good thing.
While suffering from the icky feeling and a nasty case of insomnia over the weekend, I knitted up one of the socks – I did the majority of this on DPNs and struggled in the foot section (altho that could have been b/c i was just so bloody whacked). I did grab some 3.25mm DPNs at walmart and you can see the difference it made in my stitches. I’m rather pleased with this and look forward to getting the other one done soon so I can actually wear them 🙂 If I make these again, I won’t make the leg length as long .. I really do prefer a crop sock and this is just almost to high for me -I’m eyeing the maizy socks for my next ones, but need to get some size 1 needles or 2.25mm – I might have some that small in mum’s DPNs but doing these in circulars is actually easier.
I’ve decided for Erica’s borders to use up the wrong size blocks – that will make a nice size border of 4″ finished and the dark ‘banding’ will be 1″ finished. I do have all those nummy dyed fabrics and am looking forward to using them. This is the layout I am pretty sure I’ll be using .. as you can see, none of the tiles will end on the blue – well I guess that won’t matter as I’ve not really used a dyed blue in the tiles … but the darker blue fan fabric .. each of these layouts will be in the opposite corner with nothing in the adjacent corners .. this is the layout from this border pic.
I still have to over-dye the backing material for the spinner quilt – but this will prove tricky as reg stole my bucket for salt 😐 this backing material is just to large to be using the 1 gallon zip lock bags, so I have to use my bucket .. **sigh I’ll have to see what I else I can dig up for him to use for salt – I really do like this bucket as it’s not flimsy and is a nice sturdy plastic .. hmmm .. kitty litter buckets would work … will have to dig in the basement me thinks .. sounds like a job for Kyle
I’m going shopping with my dad in the AM for family cmas gifts so I’ll see what I can get done tonite while I’m feeling okay .. i’m sniffly and a wee bit chesty, but not bone weary exhausted like I have felt for the past week. Continue reading
