Burgoyne quilt block

The Burgoyne quilt block is derived from the Burgoyne Surrounded quilt block and is normally made using red, white and blue fabrics.  However I wanted something a little softer to make this lap quilt so I have made it in totally different fabric colours.  The circle effect is quite striking so you need to use fabrics with quite a good contrast between them.

Making the burgoyne surrounded quilt block

Sew together a 2.1/2″ strip of lilac fabric with one of green fabric and sew together a 2.1/2″ strip of purple and lilac fabrics.  Cut eight 2.1/2″ strips from the green/lilac strip and sew these together in pairs to make four patch units.

Cut three 2.1/2″ strips from the lilac/purple strip and add two green 2.1/2″ squares and one lilac 2.1/2″ square.  Lay them out in three rows of three to make a nine patch unit.  You will need four of these.

From the lilac/purple strip cut one 2.1/2″ strip and two 4.1/2″ strips.  Sew these together with the 2.1/2″ strip in the middle with the colours reversed from the 4.1/2″ strip on either side.  You will also need four of these.

For the rest of the burgoyne surrounded quilt you still need to cut: four 4.1/2″ green squares, two 2.1/2″ by 4.1/2″ lilac rectangles, one 2.1/2″ by 10.1/2″ lilac strip for the middle row of the quilt.  You will also need four 10.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ lilac rectangles and eight 4.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ lilac rectangles.

Sewing the quilt blocks together

The top and bottom rows are the same as each other.  Sew together a four patch unit on each end, followed by a 4.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ lilac rectangle with the lilac/purple strip made earlier in the middle.  Make sure that the green squares of the four patch are forming diagonals towards the middle.

The second and fourth rows are the same as each other:  a 4.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ lilac rectangle at each end followed by a nine patch unit with a 10.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ lilac rectangle in the middle.  Again check that the nine patch unit is rotated so that the green squares continue the diagonal lines.

The middle row is larger than the other four rows.  Sew together the 4.1/2″ green squares in pairs with a 2.1/2″ lilac strip between them and then join the two pairs of squares with a 10.1/2″ by 6.1/2″ lilac rectangle.  One the edge of the row sew one of the purple/lilac units made earlier.

Quilt border

That’s the burgoyne surrounded part of the quilt complete.  I wanted to frame it with a quilt border so I cut 6.1/2″ by 3.1/2″ strips of purple fabric and alternated these with strips made by sewing together 6.1/2″ by 1.1/2″ strips of purple, green, purple and the same in purple, lilac, purple.

Six of these strips sewn together give a 36.1/2″ strip for the quilt border.  Make four of these.  Sew one to the top and the bottom of the quilt and then sew a 3.1/2″ green square to the top and bottom of the remaining border strips as cornerstones.  Sew these strips to the sides of the quilt top.

That completes the burgoyne surrounded quilt top.  It can be layered, quilted and bound with the instructions in the make a patchwork quilt section.
